Protect your paint job! Read this Monday maintenance tip Thompson fans!
Wax to protect your car’s paint job
No way around it! Waxing your car is work. But it’s satisfying work that will help keep your car looking new. Car wax preserves paint by slowing oxidation and forming a barrier against bird droppings, sap, and pollution. Plus driving a nice shiny car is just plain fun.
Here’s what to do to ensure the maximum in protection:
- Liquid and spray waxes are tempting to use — they make the car shiny with less work than rubbing in paste wax. But there’s still no beating paste wax for the hardest, longest-lasting finish. Look for paste with a high carnauba wax content.
- Apply a thin, even coat of wax to the car’s surfaces with a damp sponge. Avoid applying too much, or it will be difficult to remove and some residue will inevitably mar your finish.
- To avoid fine scratches, use a clean, soft cotton or microfiber cloth to remove wax once it has dried.
- Apply an extra coat of wax to the nose and hood. The wax film in these areas wears away quickly.

SEMA: Chevrolet Bringing Custom Sonic, Impala and Malibu Turbo!
Chevrolet will use the enormous SEMA aftermarket exhibition next week as a platform to display custom concepts for several of their small cars like the Spark and Sonic, as well as upcoming models like the Malibu Turbo and 2014 Impala.
Eager to change public opinion about the product of their small cars, Chevrolet is rolling out several amped-up versions of their compact vehicles at SEMA. They’ve created the Cruze Upscale, the Spark Sinister and Spark Z-Spec, and the Sonic Z-Spec 1 and Sonic Z-Spec 2.5.
Sales of small cars were up 97 percent for Chevrolet in September, but the automaker is after long-term success. That means embedding yourself into the public consciousness, and that means you need something that people will remember.
Chevrolet will also display the “Pink Out” Spark for cancer awareness, and “The Color Run” Spark to support the urban 5K racing organization.
SEMA is also an opportunity for Chevrolet to show off its aftermarket and do-it-yourself accessories. Some of their most sought-after products are the crate LS7 and LS9 engines that are available for order. Expect both engines to play a big role in the Chevrolet exhibit at the show. Chevy has also hinted that there will be a healthy contingent of Camaro and Corvette concepts, but we’ll have to wait for the show to see what those look like.
We’ll be reporting live from SEMA when the show kicks off in two weeks, so stay tuned for photos and video from the biggest aftermarket show in the world.

Buick and GMC Future Products through 2015: What to Expect!
In the next 12 months, GM says we’ll see four new trucks for GMC—and presumably Chevy, too—and two new sedans for Buick. Later, GMC will get a new Canyon mid-size pickup truck, based on the all-new Chevy Colorado. Here’s what you can expect of the new models.
Buick LaCrosse
For the 2014 model year, the LaCrosse will get a major reskin and updated technology, including the latest touch-screen iteration of the Intellilink infotainment setup. It’ll be mechanically similar to the new Cadillac XTS and introduced-but-not-on-sale-yet Chevy Impala, offering a hybrid four and a 3.6-liter direct-injected V-6 and either front- or all-wheel drive. Once fairly suave, the current LaCrosse’s interior hasn’t aged well; for 2014 it’ll be all new, and judging from the XTS and Impala, modern and high-quality.
Buick Regal
Unlike the LaCrosse, which will be heavily reworked, the Regal just gets a face lift next year. Figure on some shuffling of the powertrain lineup, which is now out of sync with the rest of GM’s fleet. The Regal eAssist with a 2.4-liter four and small hybrid system probably will remain the base car, but don’t be shocked if a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four shows up beneath it.
The real changes could happen in turbo territory. Where the current Regal Turbo is rated at 220 hp, a newer version of that car’s engine—different turbocharger, altered intake and exhaust—delivers 259 ponies in the Malibu Turbo and 250 in the Verano Turbo. Sure, Buick has a 270-hp Regal GS, but why set up the middle child of this premium brand get trounced at stoplights by Mom’s Chevy?
If the Regal Turbo does hop to 250-ish hp, the GS still could carry over its powerplant. The horsepower advantage would be small, but beyond that the Regal GS is supposed to be a full-on performance car, with a sportier suspension and extroverted styling compared to the Regal Turbo. In fantasyland, the 2014 Regal GS would get all-wheel drive and a 400-hp twin-turbo V-6 currently slated for an uplevel version of the Cadillac XTS and—in a different state of tune—the forthcoming ATS-V.
GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Canyon
GMC still is the money factory for GM, selling similar cars to Chevy at higher—or in the case of Denali models, much higher—prices. But the new Sierra and Yukon won’t just be pricier clones of their bow-tied brethren.
Last January, GM’s North America president Mark Reuss promised that the next big trucks and SUVs will be more cosmetically distinct from each other. The Yukon may have some significant interior upgrades, not just in aesthetic and materials but in functionality, too, Reuss told us, which we’ve read to mean better packaging for folding seats and improved passenger space.
GM also quietly, suddenly confirmed that, yes, GMC will get a new Canyon mid-size pickup spun off of the all-new global Chevy Colorado that’s also coming to the U.S. Both mid-size trucks will target both fuel-conscious truck buyers and also the Toyota Tacoma’s substantial audience for lifestyle sport trucks. Figure on V-6 engines for the Canyon and Colorado, but there’s a strong chance that the Opel diesel four being prepped for our Cruze also could be slotted into the trucks.

New Chevrolet Volt App Tracks Charging Costs!
- OnStar is testing an app for the Chevrolet Volt that tells owners how much it costs to charge the vehicle's battery.
- The EcoHub app will be tested and available first to residents of the Pecan Street demonstration project, a smart grid living community in Austin, Texas.
- The EcoHub app will include a "Ticker" screen that shows drivers the national values for Total Miles Driven, Total EV Miles Driven and Gallons of Fuel Saved.
AUSTIN, Texas — OnStar is testing an app for the Chevrolet Volt that tells owners how much it costs to charge the vehicle's battery.
The EcoHub app will be tested and available first to residents of the Pecan Street demonstration project, a smart grid living community in Austin, Texas, General Motors said on Friday. The company said it plans to make the app available to all Volt owners in the "near future."
The new app works by pulling overall home energy usage data provided by a utility or smart meter company. The app also collects Volt charging information from OnStar subscribers and Volt owners who opt in for EcoHub.
"Based on electricity rates, the data is broken down to show the cost of both total energy usage and Volt charging energy use," said GM.
The EcoHub app will include a "Ticker" screen that shows drivers the national values for Total Miles Driven, Total EV Miles Driven and Gallons of Fuel Saved.
The Ticker screen lets drivers "see they are part of a national effort to reduce fuel use by contributing to the growing number of electric miles driven," said GM.
Edmunds says: GM says Volt owners are obsessed with "personal driving stats," so this should please many of them. Presumably, it will also provide OnStar and GM with some valuable data.

Chevy, GM Seek To Beat The $1.1 Million Raised In 2011 For Breast Cancer!
Chevrolet, along with General Motors employees, dealers, and customers, are renewing their commitment to fight breast cancer for 2012. The groups are looking to surpass the nearly $1.1 million raised by the American Cancer Society via Chevy’s nationwide grassroots assistance.
The Bow Tie brand is launching several October events to drum up financial support for the cause, starting with GM’s worldwide headquarters at the Renaissance Center in Detroit being lit with pink bands to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For the first time, the Chevy Spark will be present and accounted for: a special “Pink Out” Spark wears a production-spec Techno Pink hue and is decorated with custom pink elements inside and out. Designed to honor breast cancer survivors and supporters, the “Pink Out” Spark will visit community walks throughout October.
In 2011, The Bow Tie brand’s support raised $1,079,633 in contributions to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer for the American Cancer Society. The funds go to funding research, wellness, and breast cancer awareness education, as well as support for break cancer patients and their families.
Planned Chevy-sponsored events in October in support of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer:
Chevrolet and GM Employee Walks
All month, General Motors facilities, plants and warehouses across the country will participate in fund-raising walks.
Chevrolet Dealership Walks
Hundreds of dealerships have already signed up to sponsor teams in community walks throughout October with more expected to join. These walks alone accounted for more than half of the money raised in 2011 that went to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Those interested in participating in a Making Strides for Breast Cancer walk in their community can visit www.makingstrideswalk.org.

Happy Monday Thompson fans! Here's your Monday maintenance tip to keep your vehicle at it's best.
Protect car paint from the sun
Paint does more than make your vehicle look great. It’s also the first line of defense against rusted body panels. Of course, the best way to protect the paint is to park the car in a garage. If that is not possible, park in the shade or purchase a car cover. The sun’s ultraviolet rays break down paint and cause it to fade. Some car covers protect your car from more than sun, moisture, bird droppings, and dust — they also have a thin layer of cushioning that will guard against light impact, such as from a tipped bicycle or small falling tree branch.
